KENNEDY STATEMENT ON DEPORTATION MEMOS
Newton, MA – Congressman Joe Kennedy III today released the following statement in response to the Trump Administration’s immigration memos outlining priorities for mass deportations.
“Forcing families and neighbors deeper into the cracks of our nation’s broken immigration system will not make our communities more secure or our country stronger. With these memos, the Trump Administration has decided to prioritize the deportation of terrified children with the same fury as they will violent criminals. Beyond abandoning any semblance of a humane immigration policy, these instructions will sow distrust and confusion that will jeopardize the safety of our law enforcement and our neighborhoods.”
Last week, Congressman Kennedy wrote a letter to Secretary of Homeland Security John Kelly demanding the immediate release of the details of the department’s immigration enforcement and deportation policies. In the past, Kennedy urged an end to Secure Communities, which was reinstated in today’s memos after being scrapped by the Obama Administration.
