KENNEDY KICKS OFF MENTAL HEALTH MONTH WITH 4TH DISTRICT ROUNDTABLES
Newton, MA— In recognition of Mental Health Month, Congressman Joe Kennedy III announced today that he will be hosting a series of roundtable discussions next week with local hospitals, community health centers, doctors, and mental health organizations. Held in Milford and Attleboro, these forums will be a chance for local stakeholders to hear about the current federal landscape around mental health reform and share solutions for ensuring access to critical mental and behavioral health services.
“Mental Health Month is a chance for all of us to recommit to remedying the persistent shortcomings in our mental health system,” said Congressman Kennedy. “Ongoing gaps in care and barriers to treatment are leaving millions of Americans to suffer in silence and fall into tragic cycles of homelessness, prison, substance abuse and worse. Hearing from stakeholders on the ground in the Fourth District who are fighting this battle every day will give me critical insight as we tackle reform in Washington.”
Since being elected, Congressman Kennedy has been a vocal advocate for enforcement of mental health parity laws, expanded access to substance abuse treatment, and an improved reimbursement system for providers. Recently, Congressman Kennedy introduced the Behavioral Health Coverage Transparency Act of 2015, which will hold health insurers accountable for providing adequate mental health benefits and increase transparency for consumers seeking coverage for mental illness and substance use disorders.
