KENNEDY STATEMENT ON GAVIN GRIMM CASE
Washington, DC – Congressman Joe Kennedy III, Chair of the House Transgender Equality Task Force, today released the following statement after the Supreme Court chose not to hear Gavin Grimm’s case against the Gloucester County School Board.
“If there was any doubt about the impact of the Trump Administration’s decision to back away from transgender protections, let that be put to rest today,” said Congressman Kennedy. “Their failure to defend the fundamental human rights of all Americans has created a barrier to justice for students across the country. In the face of a White House content to abandon the vigilance that civil rights require, our courts must affirm Title IX protections for transgender Americans and Congress must act to further codify those rights. Gavin Grimm has bravely carried this movement on his shoulders, and we will continue to stand by his side every step of the way.”
Last week, the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus officially re-launched the bipartisan Transgender Equality Task Force with a focus on restoring critical education protections, ensuring parity in health care access, and addressing the surge of violence against transgender Americans, particularly trans women of color.
