KENNEDY STATEMENT ON MEDICAID WORK REQUIREMENT WAIVERS

Jan 11, 2018
Press Release

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Joe Kennedy III today released the following statement in response to the Trump Administration’s guidance encouraging work requirements for Americans covered by Medicaid.

“In the midst of an opioid epidemic and mental health crisis in this country, this malicious guidance by the Trump Administration will put lives at risk. Imposing work requirements on Medicaid beneficiaries is demeaning, ineffective, and dangerous. For families struggling to make ends meet, removing the security of access to health care will only leave them more vulnerable to a medical emergency and move employment further from their reach.”

In 2017, Congressman Kennedy introduced the Medicaid Bump Act to increase access to behavioral health care for low-income patients by increasing federal reimbursement rates to states. Kennedy has also been an outspoken opponent of President Trump’s health care proposals and his response to the opioid epidemic, with a particular focus on the Administration’s assault on mental health care, substance use disorder treatment and Medicaid.
