KENNEDY STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT’S PLAN TO COMBAT OPIOID ABUSE
Washington, DC – Congressman Joe Kennedy III released the following statement today in response to President Obama’s proposal of $1.1 billion in new funding to combat opioid abuse.
“No family should ever lose a loved one who sought help to overcome the grasp of addiction," said Congressman Kennedy. “As communities in every corner of our Commonwealth and country confront this epidemic every day, President Obama’s proposal will ensure they have the ability to expand access to treatment for those in need. Now Congress must act as well, beginning by bolstering programs that fight substance abuse, strengthening prescription drug monitoring programs and enforcing mental health parity laws.”
A member of the House Energy & Commerce Committee, Congressman Kennedy’s National All Prescriptions Monitoring (NASPER) Act passed the House last year and now awaits a vote in the Senate. He also introduced the bipartisan Heroin and Prescription Opioid Abuse Prevention Act and recently led efforts to designate Bristol County as a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA), which enables local law enforcement in the county to receive additional funding to combat opioid abuse.
