KENNEDY STATEMENT ON SIGNING OF MASS TRANSGENDER EQUALITY BILL
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Joe Kennedy III today released the following statement celebrating the enactment of S. 2407, An Act Relative to Transgender Anti-Discrimination.
Kennedy testified in favor of the legislation before the Massachusetts Joint Committee on the Judiciary last year. He also led the Massachusetts federal delegation in a letter urging state lawmakers to act quickly in passing these critical protections.
“The cloud of discrimination that our transgender family members, friends and neighbors have lived under in Massachusetts was lifted today. With this bill signed into law, we can now add our Commonwealth to the list of states where transgender citizens are guaranteed the equality promised by our Constitution.
"We would not have reached this moment without the tireless families and advocates who bravely stood up and told their stories -- this victory is theirs.
"Now, as we take a step forward in our march towards equal protection at home, we must continue the fight in Congress to eliminate codified discrimination across the country and ensure no American can be treated as less simply because of who they are."
An outspoken advocate for transgender rights, Kennedy is a member of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus’s bipartisan Transgender Equality Task Force.
