CONGRESSMAN KENNEDY STATEMENT ON AIR STRIKES IN SYRIA
Newton, MA – Congressman Joe Kennedy III today released the following statement on the air strikes in Syria.
“There is no doubt that ISIL poses a grave threat to our allies and interests in the Middle East and potentially to our homeland. Confronting them will require a comprehensive strategy that includes a coalition of international partners and targeted airstrikes. However, I remain deeply concerned about the President undertaking military action without clear authorization from Congress.
“We are not talking about short-term strikes with a clear end in sight. We are talking about potentially engaging our country in a prolonged military conflict overseas. Our Constitution makes clear that these decisions must come before Congress, and Congress should not abdicate that responsibility.
“Beyond the legal justification, it's the right thing to do. If we are asking our service men and women, their families, and the American public to stand behind this mission, then their representatives in Washington should not shy away from a vote.”
