340B Drug Discount Program under threat by Trump Administration

Newton, MA – In a letter to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, Congressman Joe Kennedy III defended the 340B Drug Discount Program which ensures patients have access to health care that makes communities and the nation healthier and stronger. With 28 Massachusetts hospitals participating in the program, the Trump Administration’s $1.6 billion cut to the program would limit critical health care options in rural and under-served communities.

“For hospitals serving rural and low-income communities, the 340B program not only protects communities from the rising costs of prescription drugs, but ensures hospitals, safety-net providers, and health centers can invest in care for underserved populations. In our Commonwealth, our 28 hospitals left vulnerable to the Trump Administration’s cuts stand on the frontlines of our pursuit of an effective, universal health care system. If President Trump and Secretary Azar are serious about addressing the rising costs of prescription drugs, they would strengthen the 340B program instead of attempting to dismantle it.”
