KENNEDY DEMANDS OVERDUE JUSTICE FOR PUERTO RICO, ALL US TERRITORIES
Slams Trump Administration’s continued disregard for millions of American citizens
Newton, MA – In a letter to President Donald Trump, Congressman Joe Kennedy III demanded that the Administration address lasting funding inequities as disaster relief funds are distributed to the six United States territories battling the COVID-19 pandemic. As confirmed cases reach the thousands in Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, Kennedy wrote that investments in the territories must acknowledge decades of underfunding and governmental indifference.
“This President’s disregard for American citizens in American territories has led to preventable deaths before; we can’t let that happen again. The COVID-19 pandemic threatens lives and livelihoods in our territories as violently and virulently as it does in our states, if not more so due to historic, structural inequities. Our federal government cannot continue to treat our neighbors in Puerto Rico, Washington, D.C., Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Northern Mariana Islands as second class citizens – not today, not ever.”
