KENNEDY, KEATING, CICILLINE STATEMENT ON MA/RI OFFSHORE WIND

Lawmakers celebrate regional investment in renewable energy

Washington, D.C. – After Massachusetts and Rhode Island state officials announced the selection of two offshore wind projects, Congressman Joe Kennedy III, Congressman Bill Keating, and Congressman David Cicilline applauded the decision to invest in regional wind energy. With a combined 1,200 megawatts, the Vineyard Wind and Deepwater Wind projects will increase New England’s energy supplies and ensure the region remains on the forefront of the clean energy industry.

“More than just protecting our environment and strengthening our economy, investing in offshore wind creates jobs in our own backyard and brings a reliable energy supply to a market that too often struggles to meet demand,” said Congressman Joe Kennedy III. “Along the South Coast of Massachusetts and shores of Rhode Island, these two wind projects will allow our communities to capitalize on a rapidly growing clean energy industry and lead the way for the rest of the United States.”

“Congratulations to Vineyard Wind and Deepwater Wind for winning what will be the first major off-shore wind installations in the United States,” said Congressman Bill Keating. “I have long been a proponent of off-shore wind and the jobs it will bring to our communities, and it’s been many years of regulatory hurdles to get to this point. In my district, Vineyard Wind’s collaboration with Vineyard Power and their joint commitment to our communities in Southeastern Massachusetts should be applauded. I look forward to working to make this long-awaited project a reality, while ensuring our local fishermen and other stakeholders are involved, so that we can build a successful model for the rest of the country.”

“Investing in renewable energy creates good-paying jobs, expands our economy, and preserves our environment for the next generation,” said Congressman David Cicilline. “With these two projects getting underway, Rhode Island and Massachusetts’ offshore wind capabilities will be second-to-none in America.”
