KENNEDY STATEMENT ON MIGRANT CARAVAN

Newton, MA — Congressman Joe Kennedy III released the following statement today in response to President Trump’s claims regarding the migrant caravan making its way through Central America.

“Beneath our President's attempts to weaponize, politicize and racialize these migrants' journey for his own electoral benefit, is one unavoidable truth: the Trump Administration has made a mess and a mockery out of the United States' immigration system.

“His family separation policy tore terrified children from their parents' arms before a national uproar forced him to rescind. His attempts to repair that damage done created damage anew, as thousands of migrant children remain locked up in overflowing detention centers across the country, costing our taxpayers untold dollars and these children untold trauma. His proposal to resort to family jailing violates the law. His efforts to change amnesty guidelines empowers predators and criminals. His insistence on building a wall ignores everything experts, law enforcement and even Republicans say about how to secure our border. And his threats to cut off aid to Central America will make the mess he is creating even worse.

“The caravan in President Trump’s crosshairs today is not a battalion of armed invaders. It is a group of thus far peaceful migrants, countless children and families among them, walking across Central America with torn clothes, bloody feet and empty stomachs because what they left behind is so much worse. For those who reach the United States border in the coming weeks, we have a process in place to meet them. Many may qualify for asylum, as enshrined in U.S. law. Those who do not will be sent back. If the Trump Administration cannot adhere to U.S. law and process these claims safely and expeditiously, it is yet another failure that will lie at their feet."
