KENNEDY STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT OBAMA ADDRESS

Newton, MA – Congressman Joe Kennedy III tonight released the following statement in response to President Obama’s address.

“We must have a comprehensive strategy to defeat violent extremism abroad and ensure the safety and security of the American people at home.

Our men and women in uniform have been fighting Daesh for over a year through training local forces, airstrikes and special forces raids.  Yet Congress continues to abdicate its sacred responsibility to authorize the use of military force and codify the mission they have been tasked with carrying out.  If we are asking our service members and their families to bear the costs of another war, then the very least Congress can do is vote on it.

Congress must also act when it comes to the violent attacks plaguing our nation here at home and take long overdue steps to keep deadly weapons out of the hands of suspected terrorists. When individuals who are not allowed to fly are able to legally purchase guns, we are ignoring glaring threats to our homeland. With bipartisan legislation already introduced in the House of Representatives, we can address that loophole today and protect our communities from violent terrorists.”
