Voices support for State House legislation to ensure benefits for locked-out employees

Newton, MA – Congressman Joe Kennedy III today applauded the Massachusetts State House of Representatives for passage of a bill to guarantee ongoing unemployment benefits for locked out National Grid employees.

He urged the Massachusetts Senate to follow suit and for Governor Charlie Baker to quickly sign the bill into law.

"Weaponizing critical worker benefits to gain contract concessions has become a too common and toxic corporate practice. National Grid chose to lock out their workers, at great expense to the impacted employees, their families, and our entire Commonwealth. While that choice is theirs to make, they should be held financially accountable for its impact.

"I applaud the leadership of Speaker DeLeo and Representative Cabral in stepping up for Massachusetts workers and making it clear their government has their back. I encourage the Senate and Governor Baker to follow suit.

"As National Grid and its workers return to the negotiating table tomorrow, I urge the company to change course and make a strong, clear stand for the livelihood of their workforce."

Last week, Congressman Kennedy spoke at the New England Council about the need for a ‘moral capitalism’ that protects and empowers workers and their families. To read the speech, please click here.
