Congressman Kennedy Commemorates 23rd Anniversary of 9/11

Kennedy Visits Ground Zero, Pushes for 9/11 Responder Protections

As the nation marks the 23rd anniversary of the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001, Congressman Tim Kennedy (NY-26) reflected on the horrific tragedy and called for continued support for 9/11 first responders.

In remarks on the House floor, Congressman Kennedy said in part, “On the morning of September 11, 2001, extremist Al-Qaeda terrorists attacked the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, in a plot to undermine our nation’s security and our spirit of democracy. This unspeakable act of terror left a deep scar in the psyche of New Yorkers, Americans, and people around the globe. More than twenty years later, our brave first responders, and survivors, are still combating the severe health complications stemming from their heroism on 9/11 and in the weeks and months that followed. Congress must continue to support their recovery and we must do everything in our power to stop terrorism at home and abroad. We have not forgotten, nor will we ever forget, the tragic events of September 11, 2001.”

Rep. Kennedy, along with several other members of the New York Congressional delegation, is an original cosponsor of the Continued Costs of the September 11th Terrorist Attacks Act. The new legislation aims to stabilize public pension funds which are facing shortfalls due to premature 9/11-connected deaths. Under the bill, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is directed to “reimburse each public employee retirement system for costs relating to accidental disability retirements and accidental deaths resulting from the rescue, recovery, or cleanup operations resulting to the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center.”

Earlier this week Congressman Kennedy joined a bipartisan Congressional Delegation with members from the House Committee on Homeland Security for a visit to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York City, and met with emergency personnel who responded to the World Trade Center buildings on September 11, 2001.
