Congressman Kennedy Announces $168,000 for UB Fellowship Advancing Bilingual Education

Federal Funding Will Support Ph.D Study of Bilingual Education and Teaching of English as a Second Language

Today, Congressman Tim Kennedy (NY-26) announced $168,099 to support the Institute in Developing Research and Educational Excellence in Multilingual Education (I-DREEME) to provide fellowships for PhD study at the University at Buffalo (UB) for students pursuing the advanced study of bilingual education and teaching of English as a second language.

“This funding will support the next generation of trainers to equip educators with the tools to empower multilingual students,” said Congressman Kennedy. “By investing in these scholars, we’re helping to ensure that all students have access to the tools they need to succeed, no matter their linguistic background.”

“We are so grateful to Congressman Kennedy for his leadership in support of education and new and innovative teaching methods,” said Professor Kearney, Professor, Language Education and Multilingualism, Chair, Department of Learning and Instruction. “This initiative will not only prepare the next generation of university educators who train PreK-12 teachers, but it will also build a network of scholars dedicated to improving education for students from diverse language backgrounds—addressing a critical need in both New York and across the United States.”

Additional Information:

The I-DREEME initiative will prepare the next generation of university educators who train PreK-12 teachers. A key focus of I-DREEME is to recruit and support students from underrepresented backgrounds, which will enhance both the training of PreK-12 educators and the scope of research conducted in this field. The funding for the University at Buffalo was included in the Fiscal Year 2024 budget: Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN); Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) and was made possible by the United States Department of Education.
