Congressman Kennedy Celebrates WWII Veteran Edgar C. Wilke’s 100th Birthday in WNY and Washington

Kennedy Presented Wilke With Medals Including The Bronze Star And Purple Heart For WWII Service WASHINGTON, DC — Congressman Tim Kennedy (NY-26) commemorated the 100th birthday of Edgar C. Wilke. Born April 5, 1925, and a native of Western New York, Mr. Wilke served in the 24th Infantry Division of the 21st Regiment during World War II, achieving the rank of Private First Class. During a celebration in Western New York, Kennedy presented Mr. Wilke with the Bronze Star and Purple Heart, as well as the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two bronze service stars, the World War II Victory Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, and the Marksman Badge with Rifle Bar. In Washington, DC, Kennedy delivered a speech on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives commemorating Mr. Wilke’s life and service, saying, “Western New York and the United States of America are better because of him and it is an honor to celebrate his incredible story. Mr. Wilke, on behalf of the people of Western New York and a grateful nation, we wish you a very happy 100th birthday and many more years to come.” BACKGROUND: Edgar Carl Wilke joined the 24th Infantry Division of the 21st Regiment after enlisting in the U.S. Army and achieved the rank of Private First Class. During his service in the Pacific Theatre, Mr. Wilke earned the Bronze Star Medal for his heroic actions. While fighting in the Philippines, he was gravely wounded by an enemy grenade and received the Purple Heart. In addition to the Bronze Star and Purple Heart, Mr. Wilke has been honored with numerous commendations, including the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with two bronze service stars, the World War II Victory Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, and the Marksman Badge with Rifle Bar. With his late wife Joan, Mr. Wilke started a family in Western New York and is now surrounded by five generations of descendants. ### |
