Ready for Delivery: Congressman Kennedy Announces His Wheatfield ZIP Code Legislation Progresses

Wheatfield Residents, Split Between Four ZIP Codes, Have Long-Demanded Their Own

Issues Faced Include Confusion in Filing Death Certificates, Erroneous GPS Directions, and Mistaken Street Names That Are Used in Overlapping ZIP Codes

WHEATFIELD, N.Y. - Congressman Tim Kennedy, joined by Wheatfield Supervisor Don MacSwan, announced that his legislation directing the United States Postal Service to designate a new ZIP code for the Town of Wheatfield has passed the House of Representatives, bringing it one step closer to being signed into law and alleviating a decades-long problem faced by residents. Currently, Wheatfield shares ZIP codes with the Niagara Falls, North Tonawanda, Lockport, and Sanborn, leading to death certificate errors caused by funeral directors having difficulty determining the correct municipality. Additionally, due to several street names and addresses being used in Wheatfield, Niagara Falls, and North Tonawanda, such as Niagara Falls Boulevard and Ward Road, residents and businesses experience mis-delivered mail and packages. Kennedy’s legislation would require the USPS to solve this issue by assigning it its own unique ZIP code.

“In the past thirty years, Wheatfield’s population has doubled, with new homes and businesses opening every year,” said Congressman Kennedy. “As Wheatfield continues to grow, it’s essential to the town’s long-term well-being that its unique identity be recognized with its own ZIP code, alleviating long-standing problems. Grieving families should not have to jump through hoops to correct a death certificate, businesses should not have to deal with deliveries going to the wrong address, and GPS users should not have to experience confusion about where they are heading. This legislation will permanently address this problem, and I urge my colleagues in the Senate to swiftly pass it.”

“For decades, Wheatfield residents have called for their own ZIP code, but to no avail,” said Supervisor Don MacSwan. “We are grateful to Congressman Kennedy for his efforts to introduce this legislation and secure its passage in the House of Representatives, bringing us one giant step closer to solving this problem. Wheatfield continues to grow, and having its own ZIP code will further strengthen our community.”

Wheatfield has been working to secure its own ZIP code for nearly two decades, with the passage of Kennedy’s legislation marking the most significant progress to date. The legislation awaits introduction in the Senate.
