Kennedy Co-Sponsored Legislation Aims to Strengthen Sanctions Against Military Junta and Appoint Special Envoy for Burma WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Tim Kennedy (NY-26) commended House passage of H.R. 3190, the BRAVE Burma Act. Kennedy co-sponsored this bipartisan legislation that seeks to strengthen U.S. efforts to hold Burma’s military junta accountable and stand with the Burmese people fighting for democracy and basic human rights. “The passage of the BRAVE Burma Act makes clear that the United States will not look away while a military junta brutalizes the Burmese people who continue to fight for freedom and dignity,” said Congressman Kennedy. “This legislation tightens the screws on a brutal, illegitimate regime, cuts off the resources used to fuel violence, and reaffirms our commitment to human rights and democracy.” The BRAVE Burma Act extends and expands existing U.S. sanctions on Burma through 2032, targeting the military regime and the financial networks that sustain its campaign of violence following the 2021 coup. In addition, this legislation would require the President to appoint a Special Envoy for Burma, with ambassadorial rank, to coordinate U.S. policy on sanctions, arms embargoes, humanitarian assistance, and diplomatic engagement in support of the Burmese people. Western New York is home to one of the strongest Burmese communities in the country, many of whom fled violence and repression and now contribute to the region’s economy, workforce, and civic life. Congressman Kennedy has been a leading advocate for fair and humane federal policies affecting Burmese families, including efforts to protect Temporary Protected Status and push back against actions that would force families back into danger. The BRAVE Burma Act now advances to the U.S. Senate for consideration. ### |
