Congressman Kennedy Announces Over $6 Million for Public Safety

Grants Support Equipment for Kenmore, Niagara County; Combat Drug-Related Crime Statewide

Congressman Tim Kennedy (NY-26) announced four awards totaling over $6 million to enhance public safety in Western New York. The funding is provided through the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS). 

“By investing in our communities, we can address the root causes of crime and create an environment where our citizens can feel safe and thrive,” Congressman Kennedy said, a member of the House Committee on Homeland Security. “Our police, sheriffs, and troopers put their lives on the line to keep our neighborhoods safe and these resources support that important work.” 

Additional Information: 

Niagara County has been awarded two grants totaling $1,963,000 and the Village of Kenmore Police Department will receive $195,000 under the COPS Technology and Equipment Program which supports the purchase of equipment, technologies, and interoperable communications that assist in responding to and preventing crime. 

In addition, the New York State Police are receiving a grant totaling $4 million under the COPS Anti-Heroin Task Force Program established to locate and investigate “illicit activities through statewide collaboration relating to the distribution of heroin, fentanyl, or carfentanil, or the unlawful distribution of prescription opioids.”

The awards are part of $600 million in COPS funding allocated to address the safety needs in communities nationwide.
