Congressman Kennedy Statement on President Trump’s Threat to Arrest California Governor Gavin Newsom and Deployment of U.S. Marines to Los Angeles
Washington, DC,
June 10, 2025
WASHINGTON, DC — Congressman Tim Kennedy (NY-26) shared the following statement following President Trump’s threat to arrest California Governor Gavin Newsom and the deployment of U.S. Marines to Los Angeles, California: “President Trump’s threat to arrest Governor Gavin Newsom and the decision to deploy active-duty U.S. Marines on American soil is a dangerous escalation in this administration’s ongoing assault on the U.S. Constitution. “The right to peaceably assemble is enshrined in the First Amendment. If protests turn violent, elected state leaders and local law enforcement have the responsibility to maintain public safety, including calling in federal resources when necessary. “This tyrannical president has no credibility to accuse anyone of ‘insurrection’ after inciting a mob on January 6, 2021, and subsequently pardoning the rioters who committed violent assaults on law enforcement in a failed attempt to overturn a free and fair election. “Congressional Republicans must have the courage to act now to restrain this president from moving down this dangerous path toward authoritarianism.” ### |
