Congressman Kennedy Statement on President Trump’s Latest Tariff Threat Against Canada

BUFFALO, NY — Congressman Tim Kennedy (NY-26), co-chair of the bipartisan Northern Border Caucus, released the following statement after President Trump’s recent threat to impose a 35% tariff on Canadian imports starting August 1.

“President Trump’s reckless and erratic game of tariff roulette is a direct threat to our economy, especially in communities like Western New York that are deeply intertwined with Canada. This newest threat to impose a 35% import tax on Canadian goods injects even more uncertainty into our economy, with small businesses and working families left to pay the price.

“The President’s reasoning for these tariffs, Canada’s supposed role in the fentanyl crisis, is misleading and irresponsible. If President Trump were serious about saving lives and stopping fentanyl, he wouldn’t be gutting the agencies that Americans rely on for prevention, treatment, and recovery to address the opioid crisis that plagues families across the nation.

“President Trump must immediately reverse course on these illegal tariffs on Canada and take real, concrete steps to address the opioid crisis that continues to destroy lives and plague our communities.”
