Congressman Kennedy Joins Roundtable Discussion with Local Restaurant Owners

Congressman Tim Kennedy (NY-26) joined Western New York restaurant owners for a roundtable discussion about challenges, ideas, and opportunities related to the food and beverage industry. Congressman Kennedy’s district is home to approximately 1,875 restaurants employing 35,884 Western New Yorkers.

“Restaurants play an important role in our economy and community, supporting small business entrepreneurship and jobs, contributing to the region’s stability and vibrancy, and serving as tourism and social gathering destinations,” said Congressman Kennedy. “Today’s roundtable provided an opportunity for deeper understanding and open dialogue about the opportunities and challenges facing the industry.”

“Restaurants throughout the state continue to struggle due to reduced consumer spending and inflation. Inflation has increased the cost of food, labor, services, energy, and rent, and staffing challenges remain. We thank Congressman Kennedy for taking the time to come to this roundtable discussion to hear first-hand about the challenges many face and how restaurant owners have gotten creative to keep their doors open,” said Melissa Fleischut, President and CEO of the New York State Restaurant Association (NYSRA).

“As a co-owner of Glen Park Tavern since 1999, I’ve seen the challenges facing our industry grow to an all-time high with rising costs, staff shortages, and the ongoing need to support our employees’ well-being. Congressman Kennedy's participation in today's roundtable was invaluable, as he truly listened to the concerns of local restaurant owners like myself who grapple with these issues every day. Restaurants are the heart of every community, and the hospitality we offer helps shape the vibrant, welcoming communities we all cherish,” said Ellie Grenauer, Co-Owner of Glen Park Tavern and Board Member of NYSRA.

"The restaurant industry is a critical sector of our economy,” said A.J. Baynes President and CEO Amherst Chamber of Commerce. “Restaurants often serve as the heart of our communities, driving job creation, fostering local culture, and providing countless opportunities for small business growth. As we work together to strengthen our economy, we must recognize restaurants' vital role in shaping vibrant neighborhoods and supporting the livelihoods of millions of Americans. I am thrilled Congressman Kennedy had this roundtable today to hear about the challenges that face this industry, and hopefully can help provide solutions allowing this industry to continue to thrive."

Participants in the event, hosted by the Western New York Chapter of the New York State Restaurant Association in coordination with the Amherst Chamber of Commerce, included owners and leaders from Glen Park Tavern, Pizza Plant, Schutte Hospitality, Ration Ales, Buffalo Bisons, Osteria 166, The Banshee Irish Pub, Break’n Eggs Creperie, Eagle House, Anderson’s Frozen Custard, Fat Bob’s Smokehouse, Moor Pat, and Sunshine Vegan Eats.

The Restaurant Revitalization Fund (RRF), established through the American Rescue Plan, distributed $28.6 billion to restaurants across the country, including $85 million to keep 387 restaurants in Western New York open and people working during the pandemic.

According to the National Restaurant Association eating and drinking establishments contribute nearly $1.4 trillion in sales to the national economy and support 14.2 million jobs.
